PBS Kids Summer Reading Party – A Bit Late

Photo-A-Day #3428

At the beginning of the Summer I was asked to host a Summer Reading Party for PBS Kids. I received this fantastic kit of activities for the kids to do during the party. The kit also had some DVDs, resource books and more. Well, the Summer got away from us and we didn’t have time to host the party until today. I wished that it had been sooner but that wasn’t happening. The party that we did have was nice and small which was good because I don’t know if we’d be able to handle more kids than we had, we had 12 including our own.

We gathered and the kids played games together until all the kids arrived. Then I read them a story to get us in the proper frame of mind. The kids then colored in a coloring page and then designed their own boats that they would then use to create their Penny Boats.

Penny Boats

The kids were super excited to try out their penny boats. I originally grabbed 100 pennies thinking that I’d have enough of them for any of the boats. I was mistaken because our top boat maker held 122 pennies and the runner up held 119. We were running two buckets to make things go a little faster.

We gave out prizes to the top two boat makers in the form of DVDs. We also distributed the books that we received to the parents so that they could use them with their kids at home. The books were great resource books from Carson-Dellosa Publishing, LLC. They were set for various ages and grades.

Everyone had a great time. The kids left with goodies bags filled with stickers, activity books, temporary tattoos and more coloring pages. Next Summer we start things off right and have the reading party first thing after school ends.
