Pirates and PEG + CAT, a perfect combination. We’ve been fans of this cute little show since it started. We love the first book the Chicken Problem where kids learn to count to 100. We do try to keep a fairly clean DVR and figure that most of the shows for the kids we can get from On Demand, but having a decent DVD compilation of episodes comes in handy when we go on trips or for those times when we aren’t able to find the shows the kids want. And you know how kids get obsessed with things for a short time and that is all they want to watch, a DVD of episodes is great for those moments.
This new DVD is cute and has more than just the seven episodes. There are also activities that you can print out including recipes and more. Each activity reinforcing some of the math based lessons. Take a look at what is on the DVD.

PBS KIDS Series PEG + CAT Helps Kids Build Math and Problem Solving Skills
Arlington, Va. – December 8, 2014 – PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing seven stories from PBS KIDS’ popular PEG + CAT series on the new DVD “PEG + CAT: PIRATES AHOY! AND OTHER REALLY BIG PROBLEMS.” From helping a group of hungry pirates fairly share tropical fruit, to measuring their way to buried treasure, Peg and Cat embark on swashbuckling adventures in this new fun-filled DVD that will help kids learn problem solving and foundational math concepts and skills.
Each PEG + CAT adventure features a story in which Peg and Cat encounter an unexpected challenge that requires them to use math and problem-solving skills in order to save the day. While teaching specific math lessons, the series displays the values of resilience and perseverance.
PEG + CAT was created by Billy Aronson (“Rent,” “Postcards from Buster”) and Jennifer Oxley (“Little Bill,” “The Wonder Pets!”) and is a production of The Fred Rogers Company. PEG + CAT, which made its broadcast debut in October 2013, airs daily on PBS KIDS (check local listings).
The “PEG + CAT: PIRATES AHOY! AND OTHER REALLY BIG PROBLEMS” DVD will be available for purchase on December 23, 2014. Its run time is approximately 85 minutes and its SRP is $12.99. In addition to featuring seven stories (listed below), the DVD also includes five printable activities – the pirates’ fruit salad recipe, pirates + peaches board game, four fantastic flip-books, Cat sock-beanie instructions, and PEG + CAT stick puppets.
The Pirate Puzzle Problem:
Peg and Cat must help the pirates put together a puzzle, and then the four sections of their sinking ship.

The Pirate Problem:
Peg and Cat show a group of very hungry pirates how to share tropical fruit fairly.

The Sleepover Problem:
When the pirates are having a sleepover at Peg’s house, they get scared at bedtime. Peg and Cat help the pirates fall asleep by counting chickens.

The Buried Treasure Problem:
Peg and Cat measure their way to buried treasure using Cat as a measuring stick!

The Scrap of Map Problem:
When the pirates’ treasure map is torn and carried off by the wind, Peg and Cat and friends from far and wide put their scraps of map together to find the treasure.
Primary Learning Goal: Working together to solve a problem, one-to-one counting
Secondary Learning Goal: Using a map, fair sharing
The Perfect Ten Problem:
Peg and Cat are judging a singing competition in which all performers must get a rating of exactly ten stars.

The Pizza Pirate Problem:
As Peg and Cat deliver pizzas far and wide, they are menaced by the flying pizza pirates who are determined to “take away one!”
