I attended an expense paid trip by Disney to press events for Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron (#AvengersEvent, #AgeofUltron), all opinions as always are 100% my own.

This interview with Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth was our last interview of the day. It was also the most loose and from the hip. This was mostly because Chris 1 and Chris 2 (as they called themselves) were in very playful spirits. They laughed and joked and even asked each other questions in the interview. We learned that Chris Evans would like to have a bit more sass in his characters and we also learned where Chris Hemsworth would use his Thor-speak outside of the movies. It was a fun interview filled with lots of laughter from everyone involved. The guys even goofed around when it came to taking photos.

I had one question to ask Chris Evans and I got to ask it as the last question of the interview. I really liked his answer. I put the word out to people for questions and this one was the best of the bunch.

What aspects of Captain America’s personality are coming from you and what are the most difficult to portray?

CHRIS EVANS : Well I think every character has to come a little bit from you. One of the things I do as an actor is try to adjust who I’m speaking to. I do believe there’s always something that you can tap into for every role because you have to make it your own. You can’t be too foreign off base because, you have to make it something familiar.

I grew up with a kid named Charlie Morris and you can all right that down because he’ll love it. This was a kid who was an Eagle Scout. You know what it takes to be an Eagle Scout as a kid? He was just the best guy I knew, just a good guy. And so a lot of times you kind of draw parallels to what Charlie would do but the trickiest thing is to try to make him likable. He doesn’t joke, he’s not fun. He’s not like sassy or loud or anything. So you try to play this guy and not come across as boring, which is the most dangerous thing about the character.

It’s fun because it’s not me. I’m a very open guy. I wear my emotions right on my sleeve and this guy is a little more inside himself. But that’s what makes it like a fun challenge. Like I said, you do draw on parts of yourself. But I also lean on Charlie quite a bit, too. He’s a good guy. Just a good guy. He just does what’s right.

The interview started off with a question asked of both Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. That was, “What was your favorite fight scene of the movie?” For Chris Evans it was the scene between Iron Man in the Hulkbuster armor vs The Hulk. It was a long scene but was such a cool fight. Chris Hemsworth liked the scene where all the Avengers are fighting in the beginning in one long tracking shot. Hemsworth said, “that blew my mind as to how they even did that.

These guys have played these characters for multiple movies. The question was asked to Chris Evans if he tries to find something about his characters each time that he puts on the costume or does he feel like he really knows the character now. Chris Evans summed it up well by saying “Well, you know the character but you hope there’s always new challenges.” Evans went on to say that in the first couple of movies he read as many comics as he could to make sure that the fan base would be satisfied by what he brought to the screen. He wants to make sure that it is always new and exciting or it will become stagnant and the audience will feel that.

Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth Funny

When asked who their favorite superhero was growing up Chris Hemsworth said Superman because that was the first superhero film he had seen. Chris Evans said that he had a Spider-Man toy and he’d play with that all the time and make it battle the Ninja Turtles. Later he posed this question to the group, “Would anyone here not want to be a ninja turtle? Great calves.” I think that statement there made me really happy to be in the interview.

The guys were asked which superhero they would want to play if they weren’t already playing Thor and Captain America. Chris Hemsworth said that he’d like to be Captain America or Superman. Chris Evans said a Ninja Turtle but then went on to say that he’d love to play Iron Man because Iron Man got to have so many jokes. He said further, “It’s fun to play someone who wears their emotions on their sleeve. And Steve’s not exactly that way. So any other superhero who gets to be a little more sassy I would take. Yeah, Cap’s not sassy.” To which Hemsworth replied “So, Black Widow?” Evans laughed, “I’d look good in that black outfit.

Things then took a bit of a serious but cool turn when a question was asked by a 10 year old fan who is a victim of bullying because he has long hair. The question was for Chris Hemsworth and it was if he thought that it was okay for a boy to have long hair. Hemsworth then went on to tell this story.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : Of course it is. God, yeah. Absolutely. My dad had long hair for years. In fact, was asked to play for a football team, invited down to a big league in Australian football. It was quite a big opportunity. And the coach said, yeah, cool but you’ve got to cut your hair because he had a ponytail. And he said no and walked away. And gave up that dream and did something else, honestly.

CHRIS EVANS : Wow.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : I think part of him sort of says, I should have just cut my hair. But, you know, moral point and I think absolutely. God, why not? What is the issue there? If anyone is narrow-minded enough and limited in their thinking to think that that is an issue, then they’ve got the problem. And you wait, in a few years’ time that kid will understand that that other kid has larger problems, you know?

CHRIS EVANS : Anytime I see a kid with long hair I’m like, that kid is so much cooler than I ever was.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : Girls love long hair so tell him that.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : Yeah, there you go.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : He’ll be fine. He’s going to clean up in a few years’ time. And that bully who’s teasing him is going to get nothing.

CHRIS EVANS : Yeah.

It was great to listen to these guys speak. They were charming and funny. They talked about how fortunate they were to be a part of Avengers and Avengers 2 and how it wasn’t a giant ego-fest. The cast hangs out together outside of filming. They also spoke about how they are lucky to bring these characters to life and give back by helping kids in the little moments. Chris Evans explained how he met Hulk Hogan as a kid and how that made a big impact on him. Now he can impact the lives of kids through what he does. He said, “Whether it’s going to the hospital of kids who are sick or going to a theater where kids are learning to be creative and find themselves. Any type of environment where you can kind of encourage that is great. And that’s one of the real perks of playing this role.

One last question I want to leave you with. It wasn’t the last question asked but I think it was fun. The question asked was, “How much fun was it to have the scene around Thor’s hammer?

CHRIS EVANS : It was a good scene.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH : Fine with me because I couldn’t pick it up. It was great. It was good to see us all in normal clothes and not you know, being superheroes… It’s nice to be in civilian clothes. And what do these guys do when they’re not saving the world? It’s relatable for people in the audience. And that was exciting to read and be a part of.

CHRIS EVANS : Well said.

Yes indeed, well said guys. I loved the interview and it was great meeting with you and getting the photos taken and seeing how much fun you guys were having at the event. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the movie once again and with fresh eyes after these interviews.
