Are You Asking The Right Questions?

Are You Asking The Right Questions?
Photo-A-Day #1655

I’m back home now. Finally hanging out with my ladies, my loves. They are enjoying Ellis Paul’s Road Trip on Blip.fm. There are hand movements for the song, Allison and Eva were really enjoying it.

Getting in late last night was tough as was getting up early to go to work today. I hadn’t been to the office in nearly a month. Vacation, being out sick and another quick trip out to Vegas kept me away for some time. So in the time I was gone not a lot of changes and I dived right back into projects like doing some video work. This is one busy week for me, nothing like a trial by fire sort of week.

I learned a very important lesson in my personal life today. And for free I’m going to pass this on to all the bloggers, parents, fathers and mothers out there. Are you asking the right questions? Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in what we want as well as what we think other people want that we miss out on what they truly need. People need to feel valued and your loved ones valued above all else. When you forget that, if you are lucky, they will let you know. If you are not lucky enough to get that godsmack from your loved ones then I am sorry.

What about your readers?

Are you asking what your readers really need from you? As bloggers we generally write for ourselves but occasionally we build communities, gain readers and commenters. People reading your blog most likely will not tell you what they need so you’ve got to ask what they need?

So, I’m asking what I hope is the right question. What do you need from me, my writing, my photography? And how will this help you?

    1. Buck,
There is nothing that you are interested in learning from me and this blog. I sometimes don’t feel like I am engaging everyone enough with questions in my posts. Please ask away any questions.

  1. I am a new reader of your blog, so I can’t really lend advice from a long reader’s point of view, however, what I do see I have liked. I enjoy a mixed blog that offers personal stories but also tips on blogging. Being a blogger since December 2008 I still have questions and find reading advice, tips and what has worked for other bloggers inspires me. Looking forward to being a continued reader and email subscriber.

    1. Brandy,

You’re exactly the person I need to ask questions. I tend to get too compliant in that I think everyone reading is at the same blogging level in terms of years and they already know everything I know. Please ask me questions whenever you would like and I will try and answer them here. Thank you for being part of this blog too.

  2. I think you need to go on a Benspark and Family tour of the U.S.A. . If people met you, they would read your blog. I don’t think a blog has to answer questions or give advice it just has to be engaging. I think people who meet you and your family are genuinely interested in the everyday life of an average dad. Giving advice , a recipe, or having a contest is icing on the cake for your readers.

    1. Lenny,
That might be an interesting tour. I do think that ym blog should be more engaging and community building. To do that I need to know more about readers, from readers not just stats. And also do the regular posts as well. Thank you though, really nice stuff that you said.

  3. Your a blogger that always gives 110%, so it doesn’s surprise me that your asking “the right question” hehe.

I don’t know what you can add to your blog, I believe that if a reader has a question he/she will ask it on the appropriate post, and you will always respond back to them.

I like what Lenny said as well, very nice comment. 🙂

    1. Thanks Chica,
Glad you are back around and commenting. always love your comments and insight. I try to give but I want to make sure that what I am giving is what people actually want. I’d rather be told in a comment that I’m not giving what is needed rather than people just leaving and saying nothing. I’ve had a few un-subscription notices and I wonder if I should just ask them what people were looking for here. And yeah, I liked Lenny’s comment too.

  4. I think you are doing a great job Drew. We get to see you and the family, and learn about taking great photos, and what’s best for blogging form and insights. I like hearing about all the tools you use, i.e.: xshot, pogo etc.. Keep it up.

    1. Baba,
Thanks very much. What about concrete photography tips. Do you think that would be something I should offer here on the blog or maybe as part of an “insider” newsletter sort of like Chris Brogan’s newsletter which is different than his blog. I’m thinking of the best way to get up tot hat next level but still maintain that personal touch that I have here right now.

    1. Rob,
Thank you for the great feedback. That is what I am looking for. Are you noticing a balance or am I putting up too much personal and not enough of the photos that make you think?
