Photo-A-Day #852 08/08/07

Train Mailbox

Today I played with a product that I am going to give a full review in the coming days. It is called a GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr and it is an amazing bit of technology. In a nutshell this is what it does. The GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr is a GPS device that, with software, you can use to synchronize with your digital camera to automatically tag photos with geographic information. That information gets saved to the photo’s EXIF data and when uploaded to Flickr the photo is automatically geotagged. Geotagging is really fun because you can look on a map and explore the area near where you live or anywhere for that matter and see what photos other people are posting online.

I took the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr with me to work this morning and took photos are various intervals. Then I uploaded the information and photos together and saw the whole trip on a Google Map. I could also export my trip to Google Earth and view the whole trip there as well. It was amazing, but my camera died halfway to work. So I charged the camera and tried it all again on the way home. Now I have a complete loop of photos and maps to and from work. I have big plans for this awesome device. Look for my full review very soon along with screen shots and tons of photos. My photos that were geotagged using the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr are going to have the tag of “GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr” and “PhotoTrackr“. I’m also starting a Flickr Group for people who use the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr. Here are two additional bonus photos from today.

Today I received my IPod Shuffle from ToastTheTrends- Electronics and Gadgets. Thanks IntricateGirl! So Allison has herself a new toy. It is the least I can do for the mother-to-be of my child-to-be. I wrote about winning the iPod in my Been a Lucky Week post.

And now for the Contest Update. It is getting hot in here. More people have joined in the contest and some folks are flying up the scoreboard. I will update with the actual numbers after I post this Photo-A-Day post. But I can tell you, there have been some movers and shakers. Meeyauw even got 25 silver level points for blogging about one of my photos. And she created an awesome post about that photo. I learned a good deal about the Bumblebees that I was photographing. You know that you can get 5 points if you visit her blog and leave a comment on her post BenSpark: Loaded for Bear. You are going to learn a thing or two from Meeyauw’s blog. And remember no spamming. This is a community building aspect of the contest. And today Lisa rocked it out by jumping right on up the BenSpark’s August Add It Up Contest bandwagon. She even wrote up a post about the contest and you can comment on that post as well. That would be 5 points for you.

I made a change to the rules, I see that I post tons of photos every day and 24 hours isn’t quite enough time to comment on all of them. I am upping the amount of time you have to post on any of my photos to one week. This means the photos that are on Buzznet, Flickr and Zooomr. The Photo-A-Day Posts themselves need to have the comment within 24 hours to get the points.

Also Kukuh wrote up a post about BenSpark’s August Add it up Contest as well. He is also helping me get some more BCA votes. If you have voted for me in the BCA’s send me a comment through the BCA comment system and I’ll award you points.

I have not gotten many suggestions for new ways for people to earn points. I’m really looking for some good ideas that I can track easily, that build community and are fun. Send a message to my e-mail with your suggestion.

  1. I already commented on this pic at BuzzNet. But I’m still trying to figure out if this is a pre-made mailbox, or handmade by a model train junkie. I know that Mike would love to have a mailbox like this.

That gadget looks cool, and it’s less expensive than I thought it would be.

  2. Thanks Shinade, I assume you are voting for my blog for a year contest right, that is the daily one. I appreciate all your efforts on my behalf. I have a feeling that I’m not going to catch up. But I do have a chance with the bloginterviewer.com contest and you can vote for that daily. Thanks so much.

  3. Hey Mo, I can’t wait to take it up on a visit and go around taking photos with your Dad and the car again, this time I’d have a route for our travel. I love the device and hope to give one away in December.

  4. Hi Christine, commenting on the photo wherever it is is fine with me, more points for you. The gadget is pretty cool. It would be the perfect thing for taking photos at all the ballparks that you visit.

  5. It is amazing how many people are train fans. They do hold an appeal I guess, otherwise why would I have stopped to take a photo of this one.

  6. Was that thing actually being used? I know my son would get a kick out of having one of those things as our mailbox, but I think my wife would rather die.

  7. Hi J.D. That is a working mailbox. It is on a back country road and just fits there. Go on get yourself one. It will grow on your wife. 🙂

  8. That would be a very interesting feature. I think the mail carrier might get a kick out of it the first time. But every day, not sure about that. 🙂

  9. I really like the photo. I’m not really sure what it is, but it’s definitely a conversation piece. You have some real talent.
