I was provided with two tickets to see Cirque du Soleil – TORUK – The First Flight as a member of the press so that I could give the show a proper review. Opinions are 100% our own.

I’ve now seen three different Cirque du Soleil shows and each one is amazing in it’s own way. My first introduction to Cirque was Ka and that was completely mind blowing. Allison and I also went to see Zumanity in Vegas. That was a provocative show. Our third show was this one, TORUK – The First Flight. This was a Cirque show inspired by James Cameron’s AVATAR. The world of AVATAR, Pandora, is perfectly suited for a Cirque du Soleil show. The beautiful and elaborate costumes, the colors, the acrobatics and the pageantry, all of it screams Cirque du Soleil. We were about to be immersed into the world of Pandora in such a unique way. We were about to see TORUK – The First Flight!

At the Toruk Show
I figured that my shirt should also scream.

Allison and I got a sitter and headed over to The Boneyard in Seekonk because we didn’t have the kids with us and the kids get freaked out by the table tops. They have all these different concert posters for Metal bands. They also have great wings and burgers. We had a nice meal there and then drove over to Providence. Getting in and out of Providence is so easy. Zip in, park at the Mall, take the bridge to the Omini and walk to the Dunkin Donuts Center, it is a five minute walk from the Providence Place Mall. Here’s a little video of our experience.

When we got to the Dunk we went to Will Call and picked up our tickets, super easy. Then we found our seats and were thrilled to see that we were only 3 rows up from the stage. They were excellent seats. We sat down and made sure that we had our TORUK app installed so that we could interact with the show. I had never seen this aspect of a Cirque show before. This was something completely new to me and I was excited to see how it would play out. Overall the app was fun. There were a few points where you could play by yourself by interacting with the fireflies but then more of the interactive parts were for the collective audience and to have so many people using the app along with the show was cool to see. There was a point where there are ViperWolves chasing the main characters and on the app you get some ViperWolf Eyes to display to the collective audience. It made it look like the whole place had thousands of ViperWolves.

Viper Wolves - Toruk App

Cirque du Soleil shows aren’t about apps, they are about amazing physicality of the performers and TORUK had plenty of fantastic moments. I loved the beginning where there were drummers but they were not only on the ground but flying through the air as well. That was so cool to see. There is so much going on in the show that it is hard to take it all in. I focused mostly on the story of the two Na’vi boys and their adventure. All around them were different characters, animals and more. Video projections even made the stage feel like it was covered in water or engulfed in hot lava.

Toruk Performance

Cirque du Soleil shows always deliver, at least in my experience, and TORUK ranks up there as one of my all time favorites. I will always love KA because it was my first but TORUK is now my second favorite Cirque Show that I’ve seen. I also liked how Cirque is so active on Social, too. Check out this..

About the show
TORUK – The First Flight is a live immersive multimedia spectacle that brings to the stage the breathtaking world of James Cameron’s AVATAR like you have never seen it before.

Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination.

Narrated by a “Na’vi Storyteller” and populated by unforgettable characters, TORUK – The First Flight is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film AVATAR, and before any humans ever set foot on Pandora.

TORUK – The First Flight performs at Dunkin’ Donuts Center from Thursday, June 2 through Sunday, June 5. Tickets are available at www.cirquedusoleil.com/toruk.
