Book Reviews: Back to School Reading from Disney Books

First day of school 2018

The kids went back to school yesterday. I will be sad to see them away from the house all day long. I do miss them even if I have the whole place to myself and can do whatever I want. Maybe even get in some reading. In our house we place a heavy emphasis on reading. Both Eva and Andrew are avid readers. I cannot even keep up with how much Eva reads. Andrew is coming along but really working on it. I still enjoy reading to the kids when I get a chance and we are lucky that Disney Publishing sends us tons of books throughout the year. I will be doing way more on books going forward and giving you recommendations of new books to enjoy with your own kids. Here are some that are back to school themed. These books have been provided to us for free in order to give our honest reviews.

We Don't Eat Our Classmates

The first book is probably a little young for Andrew but I enjoy reading all of the books form Ryan T. Higgins and so does Andrew. His Mother Bruce series is so funny. We love reading it over and over. In We Don’t Eat Our Classmates Ryan has a new character, Penelope Rex, a young T-Rex who is going to school for the first time with human classmates and it is all about her struggles to fit in, especially when she finds her classmates so tasty. There are some great visuals and the Ryan T. Higgins humor that we’ve come to expect and enjoy.

It’s the first day of school for Penelope Rex, and she can’t wait to meet her classmates. But it’s hard to make human friends when they’re so darn delicious! That is, until Penelope gets a taste of her own medicine and finds she may not be at the top of the food chain after all. . .

I Lost My Tooth

It has been a toothless Summer in the house. Andrew lost his top two teeth and one of his bottom ones. He’s had a big old toothless smile every day. His teeth are starting to finally grow in. Eva lost her very last baby tooth this Summer too and so we have all enjoyed the silly story from Mo Willems (we love him) about some Squirrels who have lost their teeth. The book has so much more included in it than just some stories. There are jokes (Andrew loves a good joke) and quizzes and even some nutty facts. We have enjoyed reading this together at night. You have a little time before this book comes out but you can pre-order today.

Last year we received the first book in the Beatrice Zinker series. Beatrice Zinker: Upside Down Thinker. Eva fell in love with the book and we were so excited to be able to read and review Beatrice Zinker, Upside Down Thinker, Book 2: Incognito. In this second book Beatrice

Beatrice Zinker Upside Down Thinker Incognito

Eva said that she enjoyed the second book very much. Beatrice is a good character because she has really good intentions but they sometimes mess up on her but she finds a way to make it work. Beatrice is giving out some special awards and she gives one to her teacher as most strict as a compliment but the teacher finds this to be mean. Then she tries to give one to a boy in her class but puts it in the wrong mailbox. She must recruit a shy girl from her class to help. Eva enjoyed how Beatrice was thoughtful and resourceful in her quest to make things right.

Captain Superlative

Eva also read Captain Superlative and she is enjoying that story. The main character is Janey and she is intrigued to find out more about Captain Superlative. One day a girl shows up with a blue wig, bathing suit, tights and a cape. This is Captain Superlative Janey tries to discover just who this super hero is. Janey is a shy girl and many people can relate to her. That is what drew Eva to this character. She is eager to finish reading this book to find out more. You can get your hands on the book today.

“Have no fear, citizens! Captain Superlative is here to make all troubles disappear!” Red mask, blue wig, silver swimsuit, rubber gloves, torn tights, high top sneakers and… a cape? Who would run through the halls of Deerwood Park Middle School dressed like this? And why?”

Sleepy

The other book is featured above. That is called SLEEPY: The Goodnight Buddy. This is great for back to school since kids tend not to want to go to bed with all the excitement of returning to school. This book is all about a boy named Roderick who will not go to bed without ten million things. His parents give him Sleepy to help him sleep and Sleepy does in a very funny and relatable way. Parents will get a huge kick out of this book. It is from the author of The Day the Crayons Quit. You’ll even see a bit of an Easter egg to that story within this one. Andrew picked it right out.
