Free Comic Book Day Thanks Fans With Big Ad in Previews Magazine

Photo-A-Day #1902

Today I recorded another episode of Geek Dad’s Weekly with Daniel and Joe. Have I mentioned how much I love doing that show. Some days things come together so serendipitiously too. Take for example today. Joe was talking about Flickr and Getty Images teaming up so that Flickr Photographers could submit their photos to a Flickr Group to be reviewed by Getty Staff and if they were good enough Getty might pick them up for use.

We talked about this and that moved the conversation over to the uses of our family photos. Would we want our family photos used for advertising or fillers for blank photo frames and such. Many people have approached me on Flickr and asked if they could use one or two of my photos for various things, school books, brochues, articles, you name it I’ve been asked for these things. I generally do not mind if people use my images. I have my Flickr ones set up with a Creative Commons liscense and all I ask is that the images get attribution. That means credit me for my work.

Here’s where the serendipity comes in. Just morning I was contacted by Randy at Wild Time Comics. He told me that a picture of Eva was in Previews Magazine. Previews Magazine is the magazine that comes out each month for comic shops and collectors to use to place their orders with diamond distributions.

Before I saw the actual magazine Daniel, Joe and I talked. I said that I didn’t mind that my photos are being used and that I’ve even gotten things for my photos. For one thing I was able to secure three tickets to Edaville Railroad in exchange for seven photos that I took while there. Those photos now grace the fan page for Edaville on Facebook as well as their printed bochures and even on the front page of the Edvaille website. I am so impressed at how Edaville Rail Road is using Social Media to reach out to fans, that is something that other companies should take notice of and reach out to people. What does it cost Edaville to give me three tickets in exchange for rights to some great photos? It is so minimal, but I probably would have given the photos just for the exposure. Probably, but I wouldn’t do that now. I see the value in my work.

So I was slightly annoyed that I wasn’t asked permission for use of my photo of Eva at Free Comic Book Day back in May. That was until I saw the photo in the magazine and what it represented. Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where you can go to your local comic book shop and get Free Comic Books. The Comic Book Industry creates about 30 books, prints them, delivers them and allows the comic shops to give them away free. The Actual photo was part of a montage ad from Free Comic Book Day thanking fans. I had put The photos in the Free Comic Book Day fan page on Facebook. So, I had given Free Comic Book Day the photos to use on their fan page so why not a thank you fans ad for Previews. For all that we (Eva and I) got free from this event and organization I say go ahead use the photo you have my permission (Still would have liked some credit though.)

Here is the Photo of the Thanks You Ad.

When I got home I walked in to see Allison and Eva making pizzas together. I say pizzas because we always let Eva make her own pizza every Friday. I am determined to let this kid experience so much and be unafraid of trying new things (while also fostering a healthy fear of dangerous things of course). Eva loves making her pizza and helping momma. When she gets older we wil do more cooking with her.
The rest of the night was spent packing and getting ready for my Trip tomorrow. I was waking up at 3:30am to shower and then drive to Logan. I laid out everything that I wanted to take with me on the bed. Then I picked out all my clothes for the weekend. After that I recorded a video for Shave New World regarding picking the best Shaver for a trip. You”d have to chec out the site on Monday for that video and post.

I also started prepping for my next stint with Collective Bias. I’ll be working on a project with Sonicare. I don’t get to test anything this time but I do get to coordinate the people who will. I’d still like to do this project because it sounds like fun.

Well, got to finish packing up and get to bed, 3:30am comes quick.

    1. Mo,
Thanks. The ladies are looking lovely. I enjoy when they do these mother daughter meal preps together.

  2. I’m telling you, she’s a future actress/model! You guys better be prepared, someone is going to be a lil diva!

    1. Dina,
We’d better squelch the diva thing quick but she could be an actress with her fakey tears sometimes.
