Captain Toad

Captain Toad™: Treasure Tracker for the Nintendo 3DS™

The kids with Toad and Toadette

When we went to Sweet Suite this past July the first thing that we saw was Nintendo. The kids got a chance to try out the new game, Captain Toad™: Treasure Tracker. They loved playing it. They even earned their Toad Brigade Membership cards and were given a stuffed Toad and Toadette. When I got home I contacted Nintendo to see if we could receive a copy for review. We were sent the game for the Nintendo 3DS™ system and I have been the one to play it most often. Opinions of the game are our own.

What is Captain Toad™: Treasure Tracker Like

This game is a puzzle-based game. You control the intrepid Toad, or rather Captain Toad through a series of puzzles on his quest to save Toadette. I always thought of Toad as a secondary character that you can pick in Mario Kart but it is cool that he has his own game. I found it really interesting how Captain Toad can do so many things in the game to solve the puzzles when he cannot fight, or attack on his own. You have to be really creative to get through the different dangers on each level. There are times when Captain Toad has to slip by enemies without being seen and other times he can drop down on them from above or throw a turnip at them.

How Challenging is the Game

When I play games I try to complete every possible task that the game sets out for me. With Captain Toad there is the straight solving of the puzzle. Then there is collecting all three of the gems. If you want to get even more of a challenge you can play hide and seek with Pixel Toad. Pixel Toad is a flat 8-bit version of Toad that can hide in various places through the puzzle. There is also an extra challenge like collecting a certain number of coins, finding the golden mushroom or a 1up mushroom. You can run through the same puzzle several times to complete different challenges. Each time is something brand new. I like this because it makes replaying the game more fun. Plus, there are 64 main levels to the game and 18 bonus levels with 4 special levels from Super Mario Odyssey Kingdom.

Is The Game Fun?

Captain Toad is a cute and funny little game. It is good for the whole family to play. Captain Toad and Toadette are sweet unlikely heroes. They are small, slow and can’t jump, but that is because they are strong and carrying heavy backpacks. I got tons of hours of enjoyment playing this game and wanted to play it again and again. Of course, I had to share it with the kids, which is great, I love seeing them enjoy video games that I enjoy.
