Photo-A-Day #998 01/01/08

Happy New Year Everyone! Today was a nice lazy day at home and I spent much of it working on my blogs. No posts except for my weekly post to FuelMyBlog but rather I did some maintenance that has been much needed for some time. When I started blogging over 5 years ago I started on blogger. Then I moved to this blog, paid for hosting and a domain name and started using wordpress. In that time I have created 6 blogs on blogger. And I have another blog that is also hosted. I won a contest this year and so I have that hosting for free. Each of my blogs weren’t even linked to each other, so I fixed that. I am looking into 2008 as the year where my blogs work for me more efficiently and they work for my readers with higher quality posts. So much is going on and I am excited to start off another year of blogging.

I’m just two days away from a major milestone and that is the 1000th Photo-A-Day post. That is incredible to me. I have over 45 people who are hosting Photo-A-Day on their own blogs. That is incredible. I am looking to get Photo-A-Day to 100 hosts. That is the goal for 2008.

Photo-A-Day is going to change slightly as well, nothing major just a small code change to the hosting so that you won’t have to change code each year. I need a couple of days to get this fixed and ready to send to everyone. I appreciate how so many people find my photos good enough to display on their blogs. Also the photos will be hosted on Flickr instead of Buzznet.

Because I am so very appreciative here is some link love to some great people. Thanks very much to:

Here are some bonus photos taken today.

I also removed the Do Follow images from my blogs as well as from the comment policy. I revamped the comment policy as well. I saw a great one on another blog but didn’t remember to bookmark it so I missed it. However it has been changed on all blogs. Basically saying that I will approve the comments that are real. If I don’t think it is real I will not post it and when I know something is spam it will be marked as spam.

While I no longer have the do follow images on the blog I do have a list of those who are listed as Do Follow on my blogroll page and I have the Do Follow plug in working on the blog so not to worry, commenting here will get you a comment back from me and a link to your blog. I just hope I limit those random Do Follow commentors who leave me incoherent non English comments that make no sense and are just for that backlink.

I have met so many great bloggers this year and I am giving you link love each day or week or month, There is just so much to see each day. 2008 is going to be great. I’ll be listing some blogging resolutions later this week. Being more relaxed is one of them so I am going to wait a couple of days to put mine up.

  1. Hey, thanks for the link love. Can I make a request, though? I moved to my own domain at http://www.quirkyjessi.com and would love it even more if you could update the link you have for me. Thanks!

And I adore that middle picture. I don’t know why that one sticks out more than the others, but it does. <3

  2. No problem Jessi, I made the change on the blogroll and will do so on this post as well. Thanks for hosting Photo-A-Day I really appreciate it. I did like the one in the middle as well and it was almost the Photo-A-Day.

  3. Ooh, thanks for the reminder. I’m going to be putting mine on Flickr, too. I would have forgotten that I meant to do that if not for your post.

  4. Glad I could help Cass. The new widget is going to take a few days but I will post the code once I get it tweaked correctly.

  5. I’m with Jessi on this one, I really dig the second picture, something about it.

Congrats on almost reaching the 100th PAD post!

This is the year for blogging for me, this is the time I am taking it more seriously, but also learning how to balance it between real life things as well.

Oh and thanks for the linky love, I’ve linked you at my photoblog, and will wait for your new widget to put on there as well, so make that number 46 sites that it’s on. 🙂

  6. Thanks Chica. Reaching 1000 photos is a cool little milestone. I am excited about it and the pressure is on to do a really good one. I’ll be sure to let you know once the new widget is ready for everyone. And no problem on the link love, glad to give it.

  7. I don’t blame you for changing your comment policy. Right now, mine are all set so that a first-time commenter must be approved, after that, they can comment freely (as long as they behave) So far, no one has abused it, but who knows when that will happen? The *human* comment spammers are worse than the bots, because they can get around Akismet and all.

I’m sick of the spammers, too. I had this one guy today try to leave comments on several posts, all with the same spammy URL. None were approved, but he was still annoying.

On a more pleasant not…congrats on nearing PAD #1,000! I’m happy to host it on my blogs, and will continue to do so for the duration.

Will there be a new Flickr widget similar to the one I use now, the horizontal one that shows four pics at a time? I hope so, because I’d like to keep the PAD in the same place where it’s always been.

  8. Just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year! I’m sure this will be an exciting year for you and your family. 🙂

As usual your photos are wonderful!

  9. Hi Christine,
I think spammers will try and try over and over. It is just how it is. But I don’t have to publish any comment I don’t want to. Spam or no spam. And I don’t think that any blogger should have to take any and all comments either.

The Do follow blogroll ended up getting me some good comments but then there were the spammy ones from illiterate people who wanted me to link to their crap splogs. Yeah, no thanks.

I will develop a few widgets so their will be the power of choice for everyone. Thanks for reminding me about the other options.

  10. Thanks very much Tricia. And I will be continuing to post up Green Thumb Sunday images in the coming year as well. Thanks for creating that.

  11. Thanks Karen,
I am not changing the code since everyone has it it is pretty easy to keep it the same. I appreciate that you host the Photo-A-Day on your blogs.
