Thor: Ragnarok On Bluray/DVD Tomorrow

Thor

When I was at Disney Social Media Moms Celebration I received a digital download copy of Thor: Ragnarok. The digital version of the movie came out back on February 20th and tomorrow the Bluray and DVD copies will be available everywhere. There are so many extras on the Bluray from director commentary (which is totally worth it because Taika is fascinating) and a bunch of featurettes about the movie, character designs and more. Here is the trailer for the movie.

THOR: RAGNAROK TRAILER

On the way back from Florida Eva and I watched Thor together. I wasn’t sure how she would react because we had tried a superhero movie before that I thought she would love but it turned out to be way too real and hard for her to watch. She’s a sensitive kid. She is also a kid who enjoys laughter and jokes. Thor has so many great jokes in it and I laughed each time that I have watched it. I also had the special experience of going to the red carpet premiere of the movie back in October of last year. While there I interviewed Karl Urban, Rachel House and director Taika Waititi. These were fantastic interviews and as I said before if the director commentary is anything as funny as our interview with Taika was then you are in for a real treat. It turned out that Eva really loved the movie. She laughed a bunch and talked a lot about it afterwards. I think it may be time to introduce her to the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in order. It certainly would have made her get all the jokes because out of all the movies so far this one had the most in-jokes of any of the movies that came before. Jokes like the one in the clip below where Loki sees Hulk for the first time and nearly pees himself, turns around and tries to flee saying, “I have to get off this planet.” Later in the sequence when Thor is whalloped into the ground over and over by Hulk and Loki jumps up and shouts, “See, that’s how it feels!” That had me rolling, but without seeing the very first Avengers movie you would not get that joke to the full extent. Here is the clip of Thor and Hulk reuniting.

THOR: RAGNAROK SNEAK PEEK

The movie has a ton of Easter Eggs in it that call back other movies but there are also some that pay homage to Jack Kirby, whose designs were a huge influence on Taika. There are also some New Zealand/Australia specific Easter Eggs in the movie. I have a couple of cool lists below, things I did not know. We actually asked Taika if there were any Easter Eggs in the garbage dump scene where thor arrives on Sakaar and he said that yes, there was an actual Easter egg. He’s a funny guy.

Before we get into more clips and everything else on the DVD check out these artist renderings from the movie.

The interactions between Grandmaster and Topaz were hilarious. Here is a bonus scene between the two. Rachel did say that there were so many improvised moments between she and Jeff Goldblum, I can’t imagine how funny that was to watch those moments.

8 Australia/New Zealand Easter Eggs from the Thor: Ragnarok Commentary Track with Taika Waititi

  1. The horns on Surtur’s helmet were crafted out of an ancient Australian boomerang that the crew received as a gift while filming in Australia.
  2. The Grandmaster’s henchwoman, Topaz, is played by Rachel House. She has starred in many of Taika Waititi’s projects, including Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
  3. Taika Waititi is a big fan of sketch comedy actor Steven Oliver from Australia’s “Black Comedy” television series and contacted him to be “Cousin Carlo” in a scene with Jeff Goldblum.
  4. The scene where Valkyrie opens a bottle with her blade is an homage to the Beth Heke character in Once Were Warriors.
  5. Chris Hemsworth loved Taika Waititi so much he shaved an “N” and a “Z” in the sides of his head for “New Zealand.” (according to Taika, at least)
  6. Interns from a local Aboriginal community created much of the Hulk parade masks & banner props on Sakaar. Several of the interns ended up getting jobs with the art department.
  7. During Hela’s fight sequence against the army of Asgard, she is doubled by the famous New Zealand stuntwoman, Zoe Bell.
  8. The colors for The Grandmaster’s ship, The Commodore, were inspired by the Aboriginal flag, while Valkyrie’s ship colors were modeled on the Maori flag. Many of the space ships in the film were also named after cars from the Australia/New Zealand car company, Holden – Statesman, Commodore, Escort, Kingswood, Torana, etc.

11 Comic Book Easter Eggs from the Thor: Ragnarok Commentary Track with Taika Waititi

  1. The initial Hela costume is loosely based on the comic design and transitions into the iconic version when she returns to Asgard. Her weapons were based on Gorr the God Butcher’s weapons from the “God of Thunder” comic storyline.
  2. Sakaar’s design was taken from Jack Kirby’s artwork. Taika was a fan as a kid and incorporated many shapes and colors from classic comics.
  3. The obedience discs are power inhibitors lifted from the “Planet Hulk” comic storyline.
  4. The designs of many background characters in Sakaar were also lifted directly from Jack Kirby comics.
  5. Traditionally, the Grandmaster in the comics is blue-skinned, but they thought people might tie it back to Jeff Goldblum’s character from “Earth Girls Are Easy.”
  6. The characters of Korg and Miek are from the “Planet Hulk” comic storyline. Taika based Korg’s voice on the Polynesian bouncers in New Zealand, many of whom are extremely polite and don’t want to hurt anyone.
  7. The large wolf, Fenris, is a great ally of Hela’s in the comics.
  8. The mural on the back wall of The Grandmaster’s suite is actual Jack Kirby artwork.
  9. After years of fans asking for it, Thor finally got his helmet in the Sakaarian battle arena.
  10. Odin’s spear, Gungnir, appears in the background of the throne room on Asgard.
  11. Hulk’s Sakaarian wardrobe casual wear is lifted from various Hulk comics.

Tribute to Kirby

The Character of Korg is my favorite character in the movie. He was easily Eva’s favorite as well. Taika played Korg and he gives a little insight into playing Korg, or in very Korg-like fashion, he tells you a lot of nothing. See the video below.

Finding Korg

But, what would a Thor movie be without Thor himself and this little clip is about the actors simply gushing about working with Chris Hemsworth who really shines as Thor more so in this movie than any that he has done in the past.

Cute As Christmas
