Video Game Review: Scribblenauts Unmasked

Scribblenauts Unmasked

I received a copy of the video game Scribblenauts Unmaskedm to try out and review. I know very little about the whole Scribblenauts line of games but was excited for this one because it features pretty much every single DC character. Opinions of the game are 100% my own.

I have never played a Scribblenauts game before. I know that they are pretty popular and fun to play but they were never on my radar until Maxwell and his sister teamed up with the entire DC Universe. Scribblenauts Unmasked – A DC Comics Adventure is a brand new game that blends the creativity of the award-winning video game franchise, Scribblenauts, with thousands of DC Comics characters. I saw it and had to try it out for myself on the Wii U.

The game is perfect for playing on the Wii U gamepad. You really don’t even need to look at the TV while you are playing unless your friends and family drop in for sidekick Mode. In sidekick Mode your team can drop in and take control of anything int he game using the Wii Remote. They can even control Super Heroes! I played the game primarily by myself and so the Wii U gamepad was where I did everything. You use the stylus to spell out words in Maxwell’s notebook to help him on the adventure. You used the buttons and joysticks to move around and interact with the world.

I wasn’t quite prepared for all the creative thinking I would have to do in this game. Coming up with unique words to help Maxwell isn’t easy. I’m so used to pushing buttons to play the games rather than thinking creatively for adjectives to modify words or thinking of objects that could help Maxwell. I suppose that over time I’ll get more used to playing in that way and be able to solve the more complex problems of the game.

I may even get good enough to take on some of the Mr. Myxyzptlk challenges that restrict what a player can summon or various other limitations.

There are over 2,000 DC Comics characters and objects available for players to summon to solve puzzles and progress through the game. However, if that isn’t enough then players can create their own Super Hero or Super Villain using any item in the DC Comics Universe. Players can determine the properties of the character, how they will look and behave as well as what powers they have. Then they can share those new creations with the community or download creations that other people have made.

I look forward to playing more of this game and solving the different challenges while discovering as many of the DC Comics characters as I can along the way. The really nice thing is that there is a high replay-ability factor to the game because the game continuously generates original scenarios that require different solutions each visit.
