Think Fun provided us with an advanced copy of their newest game: Escape The Room The Cursed Dollhouse for free to play and review. Opinions are our own.
I love solving puzzles and figuring out clues in games. while I have never been to an actual escape room I have played a few home versions of escape rooms. Back in 2017 we reviewed the Think Fun escape room, Mystery at StarGazer Manor. We loved that game and even though it was for recommended ages 10 and up Andy who was 6 or so at the time could still actively participate and he enjoyed it. With this newest game it promises to be the scariest one yet. Think fun is not playing about that at all. This escape room is creepy and is recommended for ages 13 and up. If your child gets easily freaked out over creepy things then please take my advice and wait till they are older. Andy was really creeped out by the game. Eva was fine and wants to keep playing. I think Andy had his fill as we tried to go through 2 of the rooms.
The recommendation is that this game will take about 3 hours to complete. We played for two and a half hours and made it through two rooms only after checking the hints online. Yes, you can get hints for every part of the escape room and believe me, there are moments when you definitely need those hints. This is a tough game and very very innovative. The cool things is that the bo becomes a 3 story dollhouse. It looks really cool and it also breaks down room by room your attempt to escape. In this way you can do a room or two and then put the game up for the night and try again the next day. We had to do that. There is also a playlist that you can get online to listen to while you play. We did not do that because it was creepy enough without that.
There appear to be three challenges per room and at least one of them is fairly simple. They just get more challenging from then on. While I enjoy the box being the actual dollhouse it can sometimes be difficult for all players to see everything. We were using our phones to shine a flashlight into all corners of the room to make sure that we did not miss anything.
Escape room games tend to be short on replayability so we often pass them along to friends and family. There are some parts of this game where you have to changes or even cut apart pieces so you are not able to use them again. However, the online resources have parts of the game that you can print out an repackage so that you can pass on this game to a friend.
Think Fun does make good on their claim that this is the scariest one of the games so far. We enjoyed playing (except for Andy but he is 8 and has a super active imagination, I had to read him several funny books before bed.) and look forward to finally escaping.
