This afternoon and into tonight we went to the Salem Cross Inn for one of their Fireside feasts. This was the last one of the year and a celebration of the New Year.
We arrived and went to the basement of the building where they have this giant fireplace and there is an antique roasting jack, the only one still in use. There are 6 prime ribs roasting in the fire. They had started the roasting around 2pm. This location was the gathering place for everyone before going upstairs to enjoy the feast. There is a bit of theater to have before that.
The kids were dressed warmly and nicely for the occasion.
We had to dress warm because we would be on a sleigh ride around the property.
I even pulled out my very heavy sweater for the occasion.
The horses that drew our sleigh were Jerry and Jim. We posed with them after the ride.
They gave us either Mulled Cider or Mulled Wine to enjoy. They did the mulling with rods from the fire. It was cool to watch.
The making of the seafood chowder was a group activity. People could stir the cauldron, add ingredients and more. This was the finished product before they brought it upstairs. Some of the best chowder I've ever enjoyed.
There were noisemakers on the table. And at the table. Andy found these and was doing call and response to every other table that decided to blow the noisemakers.
The dessert was an apple crisp, apple pie with fresh homemade whipped cream. You could say that you liked it or loved ti and that would determine the size of the scoop of cream. Andy of course, loved it! This was what they'd been wafting for all day.
It was worth the wait. So good. Everything was delicious. well worth the adventure. May not be able to afford it again for a couple of years but worth it for a nice night together.
We drove home and caught the end of Ellis Paul's New Year's show from Club Passim in Boston. Then, right to bed.
